Confronted by crises at the beginning of a new century the world needs innovative ways of thinking new kinds of education encouraging the active involvement of the citizen with intellectuals playing unprecedented roles Cross cultural negotiations and alternative understandings of the processes of artistic creation will be at the heart of these responses One of the main purposes of The Urgency of Theory is to continue the discussion of these issues that was begun in The State of the World published by Carcanet and the Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian in Thirteen distinguished and creative thinkers were invited to present their latest areas of interest in a series of public lectures in Lisbon in Now collected in this volume their lectures are challenging stimulating and empowering offering ways forward for a culture at turning point, Mitra Tabrizian s films and photographs combine techniques from documentary photography reports and advertising to make the viewer aware of the ideologies underlying the construction of cultural identities As critical theorist Stuart Hall explains The images which comprise the projects in Mitra Tabrizian s Beyond the Limits are indeed fictive visual spaces There is evidence everywhere of a photographic practice inscribed by the cinematic Some reference their cinematic equivalents directly for example the deliberate Kitano Tarantino Reservoir Dog echoes and references in the implied narrative of Tabrizian s The Perfect Crime However far from merely mimicking the cinematic discourse of the contemporary crime film or mounting a moral critique of its violence Tabrizian unravels and reworks its logic from the inside Unframing the images from the Pulp Fiction like locations and re staging them as she says within the wider contexts of racial and sexual violence allows the frames to become charged by deeper more unconscious currents permitting these powerful and eloquent contemporary images to signify otherwise The racial and sexual edge so thoroughly disavowed in Tarantino s cynical cartoon eye universe is restored, Homi K Bhabha delivered the Hegel lecture evoking the spirit of Hegel in an attempt to understand contemporary issues of ethical witness historical memory and the rights and representations of minorities in the cultural sphere Who is our neighbour today What does hospitality mean for our times Why is the recognition of others such an agonizing encounter with the alterity of the self The lecture examplifies how the Third Space one of the key theories of Postcolonialism helps us to establish a new understanding of cosmopolitanism and hospitality in a globalized world based on the right of difference in equality, Rethinking questions of identity social agency and national affiliation Bhabha provides a working if controversial theory of cultural hybridity one that goes far beyond previous attempts by others In em The Location of Culture em he uses concepts such as mimicry interstice hybridity and liminality to argue that cultural production is always most productive where it is most ambivalent Speaking in a voice that combines intellectual ease with the belief that theory itself can contribute to practical political change Bhabha has become one of the leading post colonial theorists of this era
